I was very recently introduced to Thorp Records, a label with plenty of great punk, oldschool hardcore, and metalcore bands. As I usually tend to do, I downloaded some tracks by various bands on the label, and discovered quite a few bands who's albums were instantly chalked up on my "to buy" list. The band that really caught my attention, though, was the Young And The Useless. These boys play a style of hardcore that is musically similar to Stretch Arm Strong, and lyrically similar to a band like Poison The Well. The combination works well, and take it from me, this stuff will have kids bouncing off of walls.
So, we have a band that has vocals similar to that of Stretch Arm Strong, being high-pitched, but very pleasant and quite melodic. The music that The Young And The Useless play to accompany the vocals fits perfectly. The percussion work is simply blazing, while the guitar's chord progressions are clean and numerous. There isn't too much else to describe about their sound; very, very fast drums most of the time, nice guitar work and a solo here and there, and vocals screamed with an amount of passion that many bands can only dream of having.
The first track kicks the cd off with a huge bang, as the band rips through one fast, fast song, and quickly enters into "When A Thank You Card Is Not Enough," which is another blistering hardcore song, at times sounding like another Converge when the intensity and drums are at their peak level. "It Hurt But Its Over And So Are We" is probably the best example of The Young And The Useless's anger toward females, and lyrics like "Now I know you have been sent here, to rip my heart to shreds" display their feelings quite simply. The song has wicked little electronic beat toward the middle, and I must admit, it sounds pretty damn cool.
I have to recommend this album to anyone who is facing some troubles with a relationships, this will definitely help you alleviate some rage, but beware, household objects may be broken in the process. Fans of bands like Stretch Arm Strong or Poison The Well, or even more oldschool-oriented bands like American Nightmare, will enjoy this music. For the rest of you, if you're looking to get into some more intense and honest music, check out The Young And The Useless. This is one band that will surely be receiving more attention as time passes by. Great debut album.
