I've tried and tried to give this album a chance, but it's just not helping Alli With An I's case. "I Learned It By Watching You" is just stripped down pop-punk that might have been impressive a number of years ago. But, it's painfully difficult to listen to this sort of music, especially when it lacks a presence of extreme catchiness or truly memorable songs. One can hear the musical ability of this band, but they really must branch out from their pop-punk sound and explore something more interesting.
I can listen through all 32 minutes of "I Learned It By Watching You" without having a single song stuck in my head. In my mind, pop-punk should succeed in doing that. One knows that Alli With An I are capable of doing much more than they have. "For Future Reference" starts off with promise, but when all is said and done, I feel indifferent. More specifically, I feel like I sat through a bland pop-punk tune, which isn't satisfying. Alli With An I doesn't quite live up to the standards that bands like New Found Glory have set. Even though I don't really dig this sort of music, I can enjoy a lively, catchy song quite regularly.
"I Learned It By Watching You" doesn't cut it. Alli With An I has the ability, so here's to hoping that they can stick together and record something either catchier or more innovative. Right now, the band is stuck in an ocean of pop-punk bands that aren't trying to mimic the bigshots, but have little in the way of creativity to interest listeners.
