I was introduced to A Jealousy Issue through the usage of the Poison The Well message board, of all places. There seemed to be a constant buzz around the band on the board, and I decided that it would be worth it to take a listen to the band. To my surprise, the one MP3 I could find (Doll Face) rocked my socks off, and knew this band was worthy of a few of my dollars. Just last month, "Somebody Shoot Me, I Think I'm In Love" was released on Indianola Records, and I was more than giddy to find out that Lumberjack Distribution was handling Indianola Releases, so I threw that one into my cyber shopping cart, and proceeded to the express lane.
My first listen of "Somebody Shoot Me.. I Think I'm In Love" left me with a very good taste in my mouth. Many times, I need to listen to an album multiple times to get a good feeling for the music, but this album hit me as "great" right away. The first thing I noticed were the similarities to bands like Poison The Well and the many other bands that make use of the part metalcore, part soothing melody style. I didn't hear the band doing things that I hadn't heard before, but what they did was done with plenty of precision and talent. Nothing was wrong with the music, and it flat out rocked. The opener, "Burning Butterflies," sets the tone for the remaining four tracks, which don't drift too far from their typical metalcore sound. There is plenty of double bass action on this gem, lots of heavy breakdowns, and a good mixture of singing and screaming. I could run through the songs, but since none of them are especially different than any other, there is no need.
As usual, I feel the need to point out some of their lyrical content, because hey, lyrics may determine whether you are willing to get into a band or not. That aside, most of the lyrics written for this disc are of the broken-hearted, anger inspired category. Some of my favorite lyrics come from the third track, "Paperweight," such as "I have no need for this heart / For it receives no love at all / So impractical in its nature / Just a charming paperweight." The lyrics are quite well-written and easy, for the most part, to understand. The most simple words on this album create one of my favorite points, being a count-off on the fourth track, which almost always forces me out of my seat to grab my air-microphone.
A Jealousy Issue have obviously gotten an awesome start with the release of "Somebody Shoot Me.. I Think I'm In Love," and if you find yourself unable to resist the sound of bands like Skycamefalling and Poison The Well, then this band definitely deserves your undivided attention. You can check them out on mp3.com, and I urge you to do what you can to order this album online, or check the band out live. They have been taking part in some tours, and I hope to see them make their way to the midwest some day, you can bet that I won't miss it.
