If this wasn't one of the most derivative albums I have heard, I might say that The Academy has potential as a band. When I was checking out the enhanced portion of this "Self-Titled" EP, the singer's stage presence mimicked that of Taking Back Sunday's singer. I suppose that's rather fitting, though, because their music also mirrors that of Taking Back Sunday.

I listen to a lot of hardcore, and I realize that a band doesn't have to reinvent music to be good. But The Academy seems to have robbed Taking Back Sunday of their sound and taken it to an even lower level. Listen to "In Our Defense" for proof, it's completely obvious. I'm not much of a Taking Back Sunday fan, so this band does nothing other than ignite a flame of anger for me.

Listening to The Academy as I write this review reminds me of why I'll never put myself through this pain again. The lyrics, the complete lack of originality, the general adolescence of this album pisses me off. The art is nicely done, though. I'm probably too jaded now to care about this band's future, but we can hope they eventually do something different. Not rip off another band, for instance.
