Here we have An Albatross. What can I say about Eat Lightning, Shit Thunder? Well, Eat Lightning, Shit Thunder is a funny name. The music... is grindcore.
On this recording An Albatross has the grindcore style down pat. They have the long, strange song titles that take longer to read than the songs lasts. They have the quirky keyboard/electronics randomly thrown in. They have the slightly high pitched, chaotic vocalist. They have weird lyrics, and included two instrumentals on this album.
It may seem as though I'm saying there's nothing especially good about this disc, but I'm not. Everything on the album is just run-of-the-mill grindcore. But these songs were written and recorded a couple of years ago, before the genre was where it is today.
Though the lyrics are strange, they seem to have meaning. They're not just random words thrown together to look artsy. However, they are still weird as hell. Take this example, which is from "Electric Suits & Cowboy Boots": "Suits on fire yeah, electric suits! / Cowboy boots! / Baby turn it out now, baby turn it the fuck off now."
The other thing that stands out on Eat Lightning, Shit Thunder is the inclusion of keyboards. While they don't overpower anything and aren't constantly used, they are recognizable. One of the instrumental tracks, "Uncle Funky Pants" is all keyboard parts and samples, and is quite entertaining. On other songs the keyboards and electronics tend to come to the forefront during breaks in the songs. In the first couple of songs, the parts for some reason remind me of something I'd hear at a baseball game.
While the disc is under 12 minutes in length, and has only 10 songs, it's still an all right listen.
