It's admittedly difficult to truly get into some instrumental bands. When vocal-free music isn't done right, it can quickly nosedive into a bland snooze fest. One of a few instrumental doom/metal bands to grab and maintain my attention -- even throughout 10 or 20 minute songs -- is Chicago's Pelican. On the band's newest full-length, The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw, Pelican maintains their somber, rhythmic approach to instrumental metal, but expands on the sound with varied instrumentation and a better use of occasional momentum. Somewhat less repetitious but equally eerie and effective, The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw falls under the classification of "epic," and is certainly a moody and moving journey. And, as such, who really needs vocals? |
