Without sacrificing the caustic, grinding intensity of their past efforts, Pig Destroyer has squeezed some accessible qualities into their latest outing, Terrifyer. This record explores previously uncharted territory for the band as the songs, a number of which actually reach three minutes, are generally more expansive and varied. There expectedly are bursts of blastbeats, maniacal screams and crunchy, swift guitars. But a tasteful amount of up-tempo, driving rhythms, memorable guitar riffs, and even a guitar solo or two have crept into Pig Destroyer's sound. The end result is something that, while based on the furious sounds of grindcore, has enough of a punk rock and thrash metal edge to invite a wide variety of listeners. Even if it can be catchy, Terrifyer is certainly an extreme and discomforting album. |
