Sparse, desperate screams fight to tear through a thick wall of heavy, fuzzed-out guitars, plodding drumming and flowing, distorted bass lines. Layers of atmospheric guitars, soft-spoken melodies and ethereal electronics sit atop droning, mid-paced sludge and doom metal. And, often times, Nord stops for a drawn-out, delicately played segue. Like Pelican, Jesu and Isis, Year of No Light plays an atmospheric, moody breed of largely instrumental metal, but, also like the aforementioned acts, their sound isn't so somber that it's only fit for days filled with gloom -- a striking balance. |
