Feature by Drew - December, 2004
Being that I live in Georgia and most of the big shows go on in Atlanta, I'm pretty familiar with the Atlanta scene. So, when I started seeing the name Fight Like A Brave pop up all over show listing websites, the name drew my curiosity. They seemed to be playing a lot of local shows. Then I noticed they were playing with some of my favorite local bands and some more popular bands. Time goes on and I start to forget about Fight Like A Brave until a friend referred me to their Purevolume site. Upon listening to "Keep It Out", I was hooked. Andrew told me to do a feature, and I thought, "who better than a gnarly Hate City band to do this thing right?"
Drew: First... Who are you and what do you do in the band?
CJ: CJ, I play guitar.
Drew: How long have you been with the band and how long has the band been together?
CJ: We've been around for about a year now. It started out with Jeremy (bass) and Eric (drums) just jamming and wanting to start a band a few months earlier and with the addition of Keith (vocals) and I, we finally got everything going.
Drew: Fight Like A Brave is an interesting name, what was the inspiration for it?
CJ: We seriously couldn't think of a name for the longest time and we were all ready to agree on about anything. Eric suggested it and we all agreed, it just had some type of strange ring to it I guess. It's a very different name and I think that's what we all liked about it, because we try and be very original in everything we do as a band. I think it makes people remember us better also. I came to find out it was a Red Hot Chili Peppers song a few weeks later.
Drew: Are you guys big Atlanta Braves fans?
CJ: Definitely.
Drew: Your music is very punk rock/old school-styled hardcore. What made you guys decide to go that route instead of the ever popular metal route that every other band is taking these days?
CJ: We just try and stay very original with our sound. I think there are a lot of bands that we are similar to and influenced by, but it's hard for me to think of a band that is exactly like us. A band can be good, but it's just nothing special if it's exactly like another.
Drew: What current bands are you digging and what bands have inspired Fight Like A Brave's sound?
CJ: Everyone in the band has way different musical tastes. We argue about bands all the time, so I really couldn't speak for everyone, but some recent bands I'm personally digging are Bones Brigade, Outbreak, Instilled, and Cross Examination. As far as influence goes, I'd say just about anything that's fast.
Drew: You guys seem very positive. What is the inspiration for your lyrics/positive attitude?
CJ: We're just trying to keep everything fun, because I think that's the way it should always be. We're all just about having a good time, even when we're not at a show.
Drew: I see Fight Like A Brave all over the Atlanta scene, that's great that you guys are so involved in your local scene. Anything you want to say about the Atlanta area bands and scene?
CJ: The Atlanta scene is growing rapidly and shows here are getting out of control. All the kids are pulling together and everything is working out awesome. We recently just raised enough money to get a new venue so things should be getting even better. There's just an overall positive and kick ass vibe in Atlanta right now.
Drew: Any Atlanta bands we should be on the lookout for?
CJ: Instilled, Creations End, and It Takes Courage.
Drew: Will Fight Like A Brave be doing any contract signing in the near future, or do you plan to keep it D.I.Y.?
CJ: Well, I'm the only member of the band still in high school, so we're planning on keeping it DIY until I graduate in May (unless something unbelievably awesome happens) and we're hoping on touring in the summer and hopefully getting picked up then.
Drew: How has the D.I.Y. method been working for you guys so far?
CJ: It's definitely fun, because there is not much to worry about.
Drew: Are any of the members straight edge or vegetarian (or vegan)?
CJ: Half of the band is edge and 3/4 is vegan/vegetarian.
Drew: What's the future of Fight Like A Brave looking like?
CJ: We're just going to try and stay true to why we started the band and just have fun.
Drew: Closing comments/shameless self-promotion/etc...?
CJ: Thanks for everything. We have a new eight-song EP we're releasing ourselves on Nov. 24, entitled Not Our Style, check that shit out. Also check out www.atlhardcore.com and www.fightlikeabrave.com. That's it, thanks again.
