Cue the tears...
It was a lot easier to keep Geekburger.com fresh and up to date when I didn't have a full-time job.
After spending eight hours a day in front of a computer, where I write, proofread, edit and occasionally stress out, I lose the motivation to come home and spend another couple hours maintaining a website that's visibly outdated. As much as I hate to let it go, I'm doing an all-around disservice to everyone involved, and it's become more frustrating than gratifying.
This website has been around since the earliest days of 2002. Most of the years that followed were successful and fun, with more and more readers coming to check out the content and more and more music flowing into my hands. Hell, I was on top of the world when Trevor from Unearth sent a song out to me after I interviewed him for the site in 2003. New staff members (Jesse, Drew, Andrew, Patrick – thank you) joined and helped out, and I was eventually able to scrounge up a few cheap tricks and shoddy code to lay out the site's third (and final) design in 2004. But by 2006, everything started to feel like a job; not a hobby. I no longer had the time or motivation to think about replacing the ugly, brown web site or cover all the music that arrived. Once that burnout set in, the updates became a lot sparser.
And here we are today. Geekburger.com will soon go the way of many webzines that have to "scale back" but not die and turn into an mp3 blog. It'll be much simpler for us and our readers, less formal and more frequently updated. I still have a strong urge to write about hardcore, metal, and punk rock – anything good, really – and do it on my own. Hopefully our readers who have been visiting for years will continue to look to us for recommendations.
To all our readers: Thanks for checking out out the site. I never imagined it would become what it did. And to all the bands, labels and promoters who supplied us with music: Thanks for believing that what we said was worth the price of a CD, shipping and a bubble mailer.
I have a bunch of music that's been sent my way in the last couple months that hasn't gotten the attention it deserves, so I have plenty of fodder once the new version of the website debuts. I will, of course, continue to accept submissions. Just get in touch. If you don't care to submit material any longer, let me know. We will still post in a review-ish fashion, but I expect it to be less formal.
Our 800-some reviews will remain available as long as Geekburger.com stays online.
Peace out.
